ENCSN Vision

The vision of the ENCSN is to be recognized as a leading resource for voluntary collaboration on stroke best practices in Eastern NC communities.

ENCSN Mission

The mission of the ENCSN is to improve the prevention, treatment, and quality of stroke care in Eastern NC through a coordinated regional system.

ENCSN History

The Eastern NC Stroke Network (ENCSN) was first formed in 2006. At that time, its core planning members from EAHEC, AHA, the NC Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention Program, and the Pitt County Health Department helped collaborate to offer stroke continuing education opportunities for health care providers in Eastern NC.

Then, through a strategic planning process from July – September 2008, the mission, vision, and membership structure of ENCSN was defined. Workgroup co-chairs from Onlsow Memorial Hospital, AHA, Pitt County Health Department, and Pitt County Memorial Hospital were selected to lead the Network's four workgroups at that time. Currently, the Network is staffed and funded by the Eastern and Northeastern NC Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention Coordinators, Elynor Wilson and India Foy.

ENCSN Membership

30 Counties are targeted for Network membership:

Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Carteret, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Edgecombe, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Pitt, Tyrell, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wilson.

As of April 5, 2010, ENCSN has 402 members representing 100% of the 30 target membership counties in Eastern NC. For comparison, in April 2009 ENCSN had only 165 participants and represented 80% of the target Eastern NC membership counties. The top three organization types participating in ENCSN in April 2010 are hospital-based staff (44%), EMS (23%), and Public Health (16%). Compared to April 2009, membership organization types by April 2010 increased by 3% in hospital-based staff, 7% in EMS, and 6% in Public Health.
To be eligible for membership, you must live or work in these 30 Target counties. Anyone who is a stroke champion in the region can become a member: hospital stroke coordinators, nurses, emergency management technicians, physicians, medical directors, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, stroke caretakers, health policy administrators, public health scientists, health advocacy organization members, and stroke survivors. If you live outside of this 30 county region and would still like to join the Network, contact the Network Steering Committee Staff (Elynor Wilson, elwilson@pittcountync.gov, or India Foy, ifoy@arhs-nc.org).
